How to use the wiki

The Basics

Before you do anything, you must log on to the wiki using the password
Editing a page

·         If you want to make changes to any of the pages, click on the 'edit page' button at the top of the screen
·         To add text, just start typing. The formatting buttons are in the toolbar, and work just as they do in a word document.
·         Remember to hit the 'save' button at the bottom of the page or your contributions will be lost.

Creating a New Page

  • Click on ‘Create New Page’ tab
  • Type in the name of your new page in the dialogue box
  • Edit the new page as above
  • Every new page must link to at least one existing page or the side bar, so…
  • You will need to add a link to the side bar or to an existing page in order to be able to find the page again from the main wiki.

Adding a Link

  • Type the words you want to act as a link
  • Highlight the words
  • Click on the ‘Link’ icon in the toolbar
  • Choose which type of link you want
    • If you are linking to another page in the wiki, click on ‘wiki page’
    • Click on the pull down menu ‘Link to wiki page’
    • Select the page you want to link to
    • If you are linking to a web address (URL) outside the wiki, click on ‘URL’ from the pulldown menu
    • Insert the URL
    • Type the text you want to show for that link
  • Click ‘OK’
  • Click ‘Save’ at the bottom of the page

Inserting an Image
  • Click on the ‘insert image’ button in the toolbar
  • If the image you want is not already uploaded to the wiki, click Browse
  • Select the image you want from file
  • Click on Upload
  • You will need to resize most images before putting them in to pbwiki. You can do this easily using Picnik (http://www.picnik.com/). You can create an account free of charge.

Reverting to an earlier version of the page

  • Click on ‘History’ at the bottom of the page
  • Click on the previous version you want to view
  • If you want to revert to the earlier version, click in the dialogue box ‘revert to this version’

Troubleshooting

Classic Mode

When you are editing a page, there should be a toolbar with the usual formatting options on the screen. It looks somewhat like a Microsoft Word toolbar with a few extra options. Sometimes, however, the wiki can end up in "classic mode". That is a far less user-friendly interface. If so, simply hit the switch to "point and click mode" link (see the link on the top right hand side of the screen) and you'll be back in this interface .

What if my edit goes wrong?
If your edit goes horribly wrong, don't worry, you can always cancel. If your edit goes horribly wrong and you accidentally save it, don't worry. An admin person can "roll it back" to the previous state. It's pretty hard to break this wiki.
Edit Lock Out
You can only edit your page one at a time. If you come back to the wiki after class and someone from your group is editing the page, you will see a red box appear at the top of the page signalling an ‘edit lock out’. You’ll need to wait and come back later, or else you might lose someone’s work. If you want to add text, save it in Word, then you can just cut and paste it in later.
Image Size
Pbwiki doesn’t like large images being inserted – these can obscure a whole page at a time. If you need to resize an image, you can use the paintbox in Word, or alternatively, use the editing in Pic Nik (http://www.picnik.com/) to resize to a thumbnail .

Finding Lost Pages
Click ‘view all pages’ at the bottom of the Front Page. This will bring you to a list of all the pages, showing who last revised them.
